North Lake College’s art department presents First Layer during October 19 – November 14 in the art gallery at the Central Campus. The exhibition showcases a collection of drawings and sculptures by art faculty, Trevor Bennett. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Bennett has taught Ceramic Art at Alfred University, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, the Maryland Institute College of Art, Kansas State University, and at the Jingdezhen Private Studio in Jingdezhen, China. He is now the Coordinator of Three-Dimensional Art at North Lake College, where he teaches ceramics, sculpture and 3D design.
Exhibition Statement by Trevor Bennett:
First Layer contains artworks made from over the last 5 years. The exhibition contains drawings on paper, and sculpture from ceramic. The subjects of the work generally represent iconic imagery from mainstream America during the last 100 years.
These are images that have baggage. I am showing them to you with modifications to their “first layer.” This is the layer we can see. It is the layer reserved for judgment. However, many of these subjects’ skins have been modified to reflect rather than absorb.
An artist reception will be held in the art gallery at the Central Campus on Tuesday, October 22 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
The gallery is open Monday – Saturday from 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sunday. For more information, contact Steven Benezue.
